I've been thinking a lot lately about ways to make fast cash. I'm sure that I'm not going to come up with anything revolutionary (yet!) but I can show you some ways that other people are doing that you can adapt to your own situation.

There's a family in my neighborhood that always has people over at their house. I could never figure out why, but it finally dawned on me the other day. They're making tamales!! Another idea that I was thinking would work well is to have regular garage sales. I've always looked at garage sales as a way to get rid of crap, but after doing some reading I learned that some people make good money doing it. The key to doing it well is to always have new stuff. You'd have to spend your time collecting things and turn around to sell them on the weekend. After a few tries you would get a feel for what people will buy and be able to collect those things. Don't wear out your neighbors with this though, I wouldn't have more than two a month!

I figured that with as much as I've written about what you should do when you're broke, it's probably time that I share my methods. I don't do anything that I wouldn't share with you, so here it goes...

First and foremost, I've been pretty bad with money my whole life and gone from rags to semi-riches and right back again. I seem to have a special sense for when things are going to turn sour. My psychic sense tells me that I need to start gearing up for being broke and I immediately stop spending money. I run off the basics for a little while. This includes riding my bike, bringing my lunch to work, etc.

When I need to get money, my first move is to downsize. I find anything that I have that could be worth money and either head to the pawn shop or throw it on eBay. I've had good success with both, so I can't say which is going to work better for you.

After I've drained that well, I turn to my friends to babysit their kids. I've done this off and on for years, so they trust me and know that I'm a great babysitter - even though I don't have kids of my own. This can usually get me out of trouble by adding $5-600 to my pocket's bottom line in a week or so.

If I'm still short, it's time for a payday loan!

I've followed these methods for years, and never been so down that they couldn't get me out.

I love this country for different reasons than you probably do. I love this country because of the ability that we all have to make really bad decisions and make it all work out in the long run. I know that this really doesn't have much to do with the other posts on this blog, but I've been thinking a lot lately about what I would do if someone were to hand me a million bucks. Would I be able to handle having that much money? Probably not. Would I do something stupid with it? I can guarantee that. Would I get out of debt? Absolutely.

As time passes and inflation increases, a million dollars doesn't seem like as much money as it used to. It's still a mighty chunk of change that would no doubt change someone's life if they were handed it. What would you do?

Maybe we're all just waiting for someone to give us money and not planning for our financial future. There are stories of people over drafting their checking accounts from buying lottery tickets (and losing, of course). Being broke is one of the worst feelings. What makes it way worse is when something comes up and you need money to cover it, but can't. The refrigerator always breaks when you're broke.
